The fortified village of Puycelci watches over Grésigne Forest from the top of a rocky plateau overlooking the Vère valley. 14C and 15C houses made of stone, wood and brick are revealed behind more than 800 m of ramparts and the rampart walk offers wonderful views of the surrounding scenery.

This “bastide” or fortified village near Albi overlooks the Vère valley and lies in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards. It was founded by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, and its church is home to the reliquary cross of the Counts of Armagnac, adorned with 310 precious stones.

Monestiès is nestled in a loop of the River Céro 20 kilometres north of Albi ; an old stone bridge spans the river just a stone’s throw from the fortified gate that marks the entrance to the village. Although Saint Jacques’ Chapel no longer welcomes pilgrims on their way to Compostela, it does house some exceptional furniture including a 15C altarpiece comprising 20 multi-coloured statues.

This village is the birthplace of painter Toulouse-Lautrec’s family and is also famous for its pink garlic of which it is the main French producer. Of the ramparts, only the Caussade gateway remains intact and this leads to the central square where visitors can still admire 14C timber framed and corbel houses. The pale blue of Saint Rémy’s Collegiate Church is a reminder that you are in "Pays de Cocagne" here
