50 villages, 50 walks: the new guide to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France

A path, a hill, a vineyard, then the village comes into view against the landscape. A new guide invites you to slow down and discover Les Plus Beaux Villages de France through 50 walking routes, one for each certified village. Now available in bookshops!

Setting off on foot and taking a step back

A village is best explored up close. But it also reveals itself from a distance. A few steps away from the narrow streets, a hill to climb, a vineyard to walk alongside, and the village unfolds before you with its rooftops, ramparts and the surrounding countryside.

Taking the time to step back – both literally and figuratively! – is the invitation offered by the guide *50 Walks Around the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France*, produced and published by Chamina Édition. Fifty villages with the ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ label, fifty routes to discover their landscapes, panoramic views and surroundings.

A change of scenery just a stone’s throw away

Medieval castles, Romanesque abbeys, historic market halls, half-timbered houses, seaside architecture: every village has its own history. From one region to the next, everything changes. You’ll discover the fortified churches of Thiérache in Parfondeval, the colourful façades of Riquewihr in Alsace, the coastal path on the Île de Ré at La Flotte, and the medieval alleyways of Cordes-sur-Ciel.

Along the way, you’ll encounter local crafts, markets and traditional festivals. When travelling on foot, you take the time to meet people.

Your guide: practical information

For each village, the guide offers:

  • an introduction to the place and its history;

  • practical information;

  • a detailed description of the walk;

  • an IGN topographical map at a scale of 1:25,000 or 1:50,000.

A guide born of a shared vision of travel

This guide is the result of a partnership between Chamina Édition and Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. For over 35 years, Chamina has been supporting travellers with collections dedicated to walking, cycle touring, mountain biking, hybrid cycling and cycle routes. Established in 1982, the ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ network works to preserve and promote French rural communities with remarkable heritage. It now comprises 186 villages, spread across 72 departments and 14 regions.

Both share the same conviction: tourism based on sustainable transport, local connections and taking the time to explore.
