Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and UNESCO World Heritage Sites
To protect and pass on to future generations cultural and natural sites and assets of ‘outstanding universal value’ – this is the aim of theUNESCO’s through the concept of ‘World Heritage’, established in 1972. To date, 19 of our ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ have one or more sites inscribed on this ‘list’ or are situated within one of these sites.
As part of the Causses and the Cévennes, a cultural landscape of Mediterranean agro-pastoralism:
- La Couvertoirade (Aveyron).
- La Garde-Guérin (Lozère).
- Sainte-Enimie (Lozère).
On the routes to Santiago de Compostela:
- Conques (Aveyron): the Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy and the medieval bridge over the River Dourdou.
- Estaing (Aveyron): Gothic bridge over the River Lot.
- Larressingle (Gers): the Artigues Bridge.
- Rocamadour (Lot): Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, Crypt of Saint-Amadour
- La Romieu (Gers): Saint-Pierre Collegiate Church, the section from Lectoure to Condom.
- Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (Haute-Garonne): the former Notre-Dame Cathedral, the early Christian basilica, and Saint-Julien Chapel.
- Saint-Côme-d’Olt (Aveyron): the section of the route between Saint-Côme-d’Olt and Estaing.
- Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (Hérault): former Abbey of Gellone.
- Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Pyrénées-Atlantiques): Saint-Jacques gate.
- Vézelay (Yonne): the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene and the hill of Vézelay.
