In the heart of the Lot Valley, this unmissable stop on the Way of St James is home to many treasures: amongst the half-timbered houses, the 11th- and 12th-century Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy, with its 250 capitals, its contemporary stained-glass windows by Pierre Soulages and its tympanum featuring 124 figures carved to depict the Last Judgement, but also THE Treasure, that of Sainte-Foy, a reliquary covered in gold and precious stones...

Abbatiale Sainte-Foy

Conques Abbey is one of the finest examples of French Romanesque art. From May to September, its tympanum depicting the Last Judgement is illuminated. The abbey's stained-glass windows, created by Soulages, ensure a truly memorable visit.

Word of Mouth

To get a bird’s-eye view of Conques, head to the Bancarel viewpoint. From the abbey, join the GR62 and head down towards L’Ouche. After crossing the footbridge and climbing for about a hundred metres, the reward awaits: from this promontory facing the village, a breathtaking view unfolds before your eyes. It allows you to take in the entire medieval town and appreciate the ‘conch’-shaped site (from the Latin concha, meaning ‘shell’, and the Occitan conca) chosen by the hermit Dadon as his retreat from the world in the 8th century.
