Located in the department of Aveyron but on the banks of the Lot, Saint-Côme-d'Olt was built behind the ramparts of the old fortified town. The flamboyant Gothic church with its flamed bell tower, the Chapel of the Penitents and the 12th-century Manor of the Lords of Calmont stand alongside medieval shops and beautiful 15th- and 16th-century mansions, creating a charming ensemble.

Twisted, helical or spiralled bell tower… there are many ways to describe a church bell tower shaped like a spiral. The most official term seems to be a ‘tors’ bell tower or a ‘flammé’ bell tower. Be that as it may, this distinctive aesthetic feature lends charm and character to the church it crowns, as is the case with the church at Saint-Côme-d’Olt. The debate continues between those who favour the theory of natural deformation (structural elements that have ‘settled’ over time) and those who see it as a masterpiece crafted by master builders. France alone is said to have nearly 70 twisted bell towers.
