Rustic, untamed beauty along the Way of St James
A stop on the Way of St James, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and its church—a jewel of Languedoc Romanesque art—occupy a wild setting at the entrance to the Verdus Gorges and the Cirque de l’Infernet. From the Place de la Liberté and its imposing 150-year-old plane tree, the village unfolds its narrow streets where one can still admire Renaissance mullioned windows, twin-arched windows and Gothic lintels.
Word of Mouth
For over twenty years, trail running enthusiasts have been gathering every February in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert for ‘La Sauta-Roc’. This running race, which starts from the medieval village, is a huge success with its 26-kilometre route and 1,100-metre elevation gain – a course that winds through one of France’s ‘Grands Sites de France’ with breathtaking scenery! But why the name ‘sauta-roc’? The reason is simple: that’s what the inhabitants of Saint-Guilhem are called – the ‘sauterochers’!
