Located about thirty kilometres from Luchon, Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is an ancient Roman town which has become a significant stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.

Basilique paléochrétienne et chapelle Saint-Julien

The remains of a basilica of unknown date have been found, along with coins dating from the 4th century. Twenty-eight sarcophagi carved from Pyrenean marble were found in its foundations. The Chapel of Saint Julian is nearby.

Cathédrale Sainte-Marie

This cathedral dates from the 11th and 14th centuries. Its tympanum depicts the Adoration of the Magi, the Virgin and Child, and Saint Bertrand. Inside, visitors can admire a set of 66 carved wooden choir stalls and a 16th century corner organ.

Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Cathedral is thought to house one of the finest classical organs in Europe. Commissioned by Jean de MAULEON, Bishop of Comminges, it was built following the completion of the choir stalls in 1551 and is thought to be the work of Nicolas BACHELIER, a French architect and sculptor (1487–1556). Listed as a Historic Monument since 1840, it is a rare example of a gallery organ whose case, rising to a height of nearly 16 metres, follows the angle of the wall against which it rests.
