Colmars and Hierges have been named among the Most Beautiful Villages in France!
On Saturday 27 September 2025, the Quality and Accreditation Committee of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’, meeting in Brouage (Charente-Maritime), voted in favour of awarding the status to Colmars (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) and Hierges (Ardennes). It also renewed the accreditation for 13 of the villages belonging to the national network, which now comprises 184 villages spread across 14 regions and 72 departments.
Colmars, a medieval fortified town in the Haut Verdon
In the Mercantour National Park, the village of Colmars (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), known as “Colmars-les-Alpes”, won the approval of the Quality and Certification Commission of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’ this Saturday! The ancient medieval town, fortified by Vauban, is one of the jewels of the Haut Verdon. Set amidst a landscape of valleys and mountains ideal for outdoor activities, the cobbled streets lined with tall houses adorned with sundials clearly reflect this dual influence of the Alps and Provence. In addition to its rich heritage, the Commission members particularly appreciated the local council’s policy of promoting the village, as well as the economic vitality of this thriving community, where everyday shops and public services are still thriving.

Along with Hierges, the Ardennes are celebrating their first village to receive the label!
A stone’s throw from Belgium, between Charleville-Mézières and Namur, Hierges (Ardennes) has just become the first village in the Ardennes department to be awarded the label! Dominated by a Renaissance castle built on the ruins of a 9th-century fortress, its cobbled streets, lined with houses built of Givet blue stone and featuring slate roofs, have retained their medieval character. Nestled between the Ardennes forest and open landscapes overlooking the Meuse valley – which can be admired from the ramparts – Hierges is set in a natural setting that adds to the charm of the place. Following two previous applications in 2004 and 2010, the commission particularly commended the work carried out to enhance the village and develop its public spaces.
