Nestled in the heart of the Berry region, Apremont lies amidst a landscape of hedgerows and meadows on the banks of the Allier. Dominated by its château, set within a flower-filled park inspired by Vita Sackville-West’s English garden at Sissinghurst, the village was completely restored in the last century.

About 1 km north of the village of Apremont, the road running alongside the River Allier is marked by an exceptional engineering structure. This is a circular lock, known as the ‘Ecluse ronde des Lorrains’, built in 1838. Its main purpose was to facilitate the passage of boats by rotating them. Now disused for navigation, it is believed to be the only one of its kind in France still in its original condition.
