Barfleur, the leading port of the Anglo-Norman kingdom in medieval times, remains a thriving port with a strong recreational boating and fishing industry. Its grey granite houses jut out over the English Channel and are watched over by the Gatteville semaphore station and lighthouse.

In one of France’s most beautiful harbours, the eye is naturally drawn to the sea… but in Barfleur, it is also worth looking up – or, more precisely, towards the rooftops. Perched atop the roofs and dormers are indeed some remarkable pottery features: ridge finials (adorned with birds and other ornamental motifs), and ‘taffettes’ (ridge tiles) featuring lace or button motifs. These architectural features were once produced by a community of pottery craftsmen based around Saussemesnil (Val de Saire), some twenty kilometres from Barfleur.

As part of the “Histoire(s) d’en d’écouvrir” storytelling festival organized by the Manche Department: On March 17, Saint Patrick is celebrated in Ireland and around the world… a chance to delve into the stories—true or fictional—of the saint’s life. Poetic or comical, in spoken word or song, follow in the footsteps of the man who drove snakes, earthworms, and toads from the Emerald Isle—and whose mother, it is said, ran a whiskey distillery! Barfleur and the sea... The town’s entire history revolves around it: first, its name, given by the Vikings who sailed in from the north more than 1,000 years ago, and then its rise during the Middle Ages thanks to shipbuilding and fishing. Barfleur, with its ever-changing palette of colors that shifts with the tides, has inspired artists who have set up their easels here. On the itinerary: 1. The history of the port and the origins of Barfleur. 2. The church of Barfleur. 3. A scenic tour of the beach, lighthouse, and semaphore. 4. The narrow streets of Barfleur, the artists, and the writers. Duration: 2 hours, 2 km—recommended for ages 8 and up. Reservations required through the Cotentin Tourist Office. The meeting point will be provided at the time of reservation.

Visite familiale - Les p'tits vikings de Barfleur
While the Vikings are well established in Normandy, William the Conqueror, as a worthy heir to the greatest Scandinavian chieftains, has his sights set on the kingdom of England. He already had a plan to land on the island, and was looking to enlist sailors with a wide range of skills: complex knots, recognition of enemy banners, drakkar design and swordplay. Only then can you get your foot on deck! On the program: - Learn how to make nautical knots. - Identify the parts of a ship in Viking times. - Draw your own coat of arms. - Tactical game: Cross the Channel to Hastings. --> With historical anecdotes throughout the visit for young and old. Duration: 2h, 2km - recommended for ages 6 to 12. Reservations required at the Cotentin Tourist Office. All ages are welcome on this tour: children and accompanying adults must each have a ticket. The meeting point will be communicated at the time of booking.
