Châtillon-en-Diois, a wine-growing village with flower-lined streets set against the panoramic views of the Vercors
In the heart of the Diois, Châtillon-en-Diois unfolds its narrow, flower-lined streets, known as "viols", and its medieval façades bathed in the sunshine of the Southern Vercors. Places of inspiration: the film Knock was filmed here, and Giono mentions it in his novels. You’ll be swept away by its mountain atmosphere and smell the sweet scents of the flowers that adorn the houses of this botanical village, surrounded by terraced vineyards facing the cliffs of Glandasse.
The vineyards of the Vercors
At the foot of the cliffs, Châtillon-en-Diois takes you into the heart of the Drôme for a getaway amongst vineyards, flower-lined paths and the relaxed southern lifestyle.
Word of Mouth
Around 1870, the vineyards of Châtillon-en-Diois were ravaged by phylloxera. The winegrowers then replanted with different grape varieties, which required a great deal of water. To store all their tools and collect the water needed to tend these new vines, the winegrowers built ‘cabanons à vignes’ (vineyard sheds), fitted with a rainwater collection system. Well-preserved in the Diois region, they form a distinctive part of the local heritage. Today, the village has no fewer than 70 such vineyard sheds.
