Nestled in the heart of the Creuse Valley, Gargilesse-Dampierre invites you to stroll through its medieval streets and past its houses with steep-pitched roofs. The Romanesque church and the castle come into view as you stroll along.

Word of Mouth
A renowned harpist, Pierre JAMET decided to settle in Gargilesse in the early 1960s to give private harp lessons. Encouraged by friends, he first founded a harp school there, which evolved into a festival in 1968. Now a veritable institution for lovers of this musical instrument, this international event will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027. Today, it is Pierre JAMET’s daughter, Marie-Claire – also a harpist – who has taken over the reins to develop the festival, making Gargilesse the world capital of the harp.

Expostion "Aurore Sand, souvenirs"
The Gargilesse house-workshop, former home of painter Léon Detroy and later of Aurore Sand, now features areas dedicated to their works and memories.
The Maison Atelier in the village of Gargilesse was the home of Impressionist painter Léon Detroy, who lived there until his death in 1955. It later became the home of Aurore Sand, George's granddaughter. In this place brimming with memories, discover a room dedicated to the painter and another in tribute to Aurore (paintings, photos, objects).

Exposition "George Sand, l'âme des paysage - Gargilesse, Nohant et autres lieux"
In Gargilesse, a village dear to George Sand?s heart, where she loved to stay for its peace and quiet, the beauty of its landscapes and the inspiration she found there, a major exhibition is presented at the Château de Gargilesse, from June 6 to September 20, 2026.
Through her literary work, deeply rooted in Berry, George Sand forged a singular link between landscape, territory and imagination. Intimately attached to her adopted homeland, she turned the Berry landscapes into a living stage set, reflecting her commitment to nature, rurality and popular traditions. But beyond Berry, her many travels have nurtured a broader vision of the land, in which landscapes become the sensitive witnesses of a thought in motion. In his novels such as La Mare au Diable and François le Champi, landscapes are more than just backdrops: they play a full part in the narrative, embodying the characters? moods and social tensions.
