Troglodytic and Medieval stopover in the Loir Valley
A Gothic bridge spanning the River Loir leads to this village nestled at the foot of a fortified castle. This castle withstood an assault by Richard the Lionheart, but was eventually captured by Henry IV’s troops. Today, visitors can admire the castle's ramparts and towers, as well as its 26-metre-high keep. The village itself is a blend of styles and eras, from cave dwellings to Gothic and Renaissance mansions.

Although the goats have gone, the path they gave its name to is still there. The “Rotte aux biques”, this hillside goat track, offers remarkable sweeping views over the village of Lavardin and the landscapes of the Loir Valley. The path, which forms part of the GR35, also takes you past numerous troglodytic dwellings, some of which are still lived in, whilst others have been converted into holiday cottages or artists’ studios.
