Moncontour, a medieval town perched in the heart of Brittany
Moncontour, a true medieval gem of Brittany, invites you to wander through its cobbled streets, past its half-timbered houses and in the shadow of its ramparts. A former fortress town of the Penthièvre region, it also tells the epic story of berlingue, a linen and hemp fabric once exported as far as India.
Next, head to Saint-Mathurin Church, famous for its 16th-century stained-glass windows, before making your way to the surrounding valleys, where peaceful paths and views of the Breton countryside await you.

With an area of 0.48 square kilometres, it is the smallest village in the ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ network. It ranks among the ‘Top 20’ smallest villages in France, but despite its tiny size, the village is very lively and is home to nearly 1,000 residents. To set up some of its facilities, the village has had to collaborate with neighbouring municipalities. Although they are right next to this charming village, Moncontour’s secondary school and swimming pool are actually situated within the boundaries of… Plémy, a neighbouring commune.

A walk around Moncontour
When the fine weather returns, it’s the perfect time to explore the walking trails around the medieval town. The 4.6 km circuit winds through valleys, woodland and past chapels, and can be extended to Mont Bel-Air, the highest point in the Côtes d’Armor.
Horse-drawn carriage ride
In summer, set off on a guided tour at the leisurely pace of the horses and experience Moncontour in a whole new light. All the town’s secrets are gently revealed, to the rhythm of the horses’ hooves.
