Seaside and countryside in the Caux region
Veules-les-Roses is situated between Fécamp and Dieppe on the Caux plateau, overlooking the cliffs of the Alabaster Coast. This charming village is nestled between the sea and the countryside. Before flowing into the English Channel, the Veules — the 'smallest river in France' — winds its way through a lush, floral landscape, passing mills and thatched cottages. Meanwhile, villas and bathing huts serve as a reminder of the seaside resort's origins. This dual character is reflected in the cuisine, which combines fresh seafood with watercress grown at the source of the Veules.
Word of Mouth
Like far too many coastal towns, Veules-les-Roses ‘concreted over’ its seafront in the post-war decades. Determined to reclaim this iconic space, the council commissioned the architect and urban planner Gérard PENOT. The winner of the 2015 Grand Prix de l’Urbanisme proposed removing the numerous obstacles that had accumulated over time, reducing the number of parking spaces and restoring the Veules – which had previously been channelled – to its natural state amidst a lush green setting. This ambitious project, carried out between 2001 and 2014, now adds to the pleasure and uniqueness of a visit to the town.
