From stone and timber houses with corbelled or half-timbered walls and turrets to mullioned and twin windows, arched doorways and flower-lined alleyways, it is Bruniquel's wealth of detail that makes it so charming. Situated at the borders of Quercy, Albigeois and Rouergue, this former stopover on the Way of St James has also preserved its castles and ramparts.

The château hosts numerous permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as the village's main events. They feature vaulted rooms, a chapel, a Renaissance gallery and a prehistory gallery.

Word of Mouth

It was on 24 February 1990 that the speleologist Bruno KOWALCZEWSKI discovered the Bruniquel Cave. Various research projects went on to reveal that the cave houses the oldest man-made structure in history to have been created in an underground environment! In a large chamber, 350 metres from the entrance, a multitude of broken concretions are clustered together, forming a large ovoid structure and other smaller arrangements. Scientists have dated this formation, comprising more than 400 stalagmites, to 176,000 years before Christ. Currently closed to the public for conservation reasons, the cave may become accessible in a few years’ time thanks to an interpretation centre.
