Saint-Amand-de-Coly: a journey into a medieval gem of the Périgord Noir and its fortified abbey

Towering 30 metres high over the centre of the village, the fortified abbey church of Saint-Amand-de-Coly is an imposing sight. Dating from the 12th century, it combines Romanesque architecture with medieval defensive features.

A day’s walking

Set off on the trails around Saint-Amand-de-Coly. Whether you choose the panoramic ‘Vallées et Coteaux’ loop (14 km / 5½ hours) or the Château de la Filolie loop (19 km / 6½ hours), you’ll be able to admire the village, its woods and streams. Signposted trails for all levels promise a day out in the countryside with friends.

Cycling route

Starting from the village, head towards the Vézère valley and its charming villages. From short circuits to more challenging routes, there’s something for everyone. Your cycling trips will be set against the backdrop of the Périgord’s heritage and landscapes. Experienced cyclists will particularly enjoy “La Source du Coly”, a 24 km loop (2 hours), whilst the “La Vézère à Vélo” cycle route (37 km / 1 to 2 hours) offers a more accessible route from Les Eyzies.

Discovering local crafts

Even in the rain, Saint-Amand-de-Coly has some lovely surprises in store! Take the time to discover the work of Alain Lagorsse, an artistic coppersmith, and Sébastien Annibale, a cutler at the forge and creator of the “Le Saint-Amand” knife. As for local specialities, pop into “La Chavagn’”, a craft brewery whose products have won awards at the Concours Général Agricole.
