Painting on the river Sarthe
Fifteen kilometres south-west of Alençon, nestled in a bend of the River Sarthe spanned by a small stone bridge, Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei’s old village houses cluster around the 11th-century Romanesque church with its exceptional frescoes. On the opposite bank of the Sarthe, opposite the charming 15th-century chapel, a miraculous spring, said to have sprung from the prayers of Saint Céneri, is believed to have the power to cure certain eye diseases...
Word of Mouth
Whilst the village is certainly full of character, so too is the medieval church – and, more specifically, its Stations of the Cross. This is the brainchild of Christian MALEZIEUX, a painter and sculptor who has lived in the Alpes Mancelles since 1983. Created to mark the transition into the third millennium, the work is unique in that it comprises fourteen stations instead of the usual twelve. The lead and pewter figures, naked and tormented, sculpted in a very minimalist contemporary style, bring the old walls of the Romanesque sanctuary vividly to life.
