History, beliefs and traditions in the heart of the Vosges

Nestled amidst rolling green hills in the Vosges mountains, Saint-Quirin is a settlement dating back to Gallo-Roman times, as evidenced by the La Croix Guillaume archaeological site. More recently, the priory and its church with its two steeples topped by three onion domes bear witness to the village’s 13th-century religious vocation. The tradition of glassmaking and the legend of the miraculous fountain are also intertwined in this pleasant place to stop.

Word of Mouth

Saint-Quirin is a linear village, consisting mainly of two rows of terraced houses on either side of the main street. The street is characterised by its extra width, with houses set back several metres from the carriageway, in front of which there are ‘usoirs’. Typical of villages in Lorraine, these open spaces for private use are in fact part of the local authority’s public domain. They were once used by local residents to store farm equipment and piles of manure, and also served as a communal workspace. Still used today to store firewood, they lend the village charm and character.
