The Saint-Véranne tradition

Wood carving flourished in the Queyras region from the 17th to the 20th century. During the long winter months, the locals developed this folk art by crafting, using their own resources, furniture, tools and a host of everyday objects. Made from solid local timber, these items are adorned with carved decorations. The wood species most commonly used for making furniture and carved objects are Swiss stone pine and hook pine. Larch is generally used for joinery, roof framing and shingles (traditional roof covering made from planks).
