The Legend of Saint Agnes
A princess named Agnes, caught in a terrible storm, implored the saint, who guided her to a cave where she could take shelter. It was near this cave that she had the first shrine dedicated to Saint Agnes built, which is said to have been the origin of the present-day village. On the site of the chapel stands a military structure, but there is a chapel next to the fort, and Saint Agnes is celebrated on 21 January.

Take the “Chemin de Sainte-Agnès” and experience what daily life was like for the locals who used to take this route to Menton! This 2-hour walk (one way) via the Col de Garde offers some stunning views of the valley.

Walks from the Chapel of Saint Sebastian
At the entrance to the village, the Saint-Sébastien Chapel (17th century) is the starting point for numerous walking routes. At this time of year, it’s not yet too hot to set off for the Alpine peaks! From Mont Ours (1,239 metres) to the Pointe du Sirricocca (1,051 metres), via Mont Méras (1,243 metres) or the Pic du Baudon (1,264 metres), your efforts will be rewarded with superb views over the Menton region.
Make a note in your diaries: the Hiking Criterium, held every 1 May, is a chance to explore the region and enjoy a friendly get-together with members of the Sainte-Agnès Hiking Association.
The Lavender Festival
It’s one of the symbols of Provence, but we never tire of it: lavender is celebrated in Sainte-Agnès! Join us on the last weekend in July to witness the harvest arriving on donkeys’ backs. Distillation, wellness activities, as well as a Provençal market, a dance and a mass at the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges await you for an experience blending tradition and conviviality.
