Summits of the Auvergne region
Situated at an altitude of 950 metres within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, Salers is a must-visit destination in the region. A unique 16th-century ensemble, its mansions and turreted houses built of volcanic stone lend the village an austere charm. Among the many heritage treasures of this fortified town, Saint-Mathieu Church houses five 17th-century Aubusson tapestries, a Deposition of Christ and a polychrome lectern. Salers also owes its reputation to the richness of its local produce, of which cheese and meat are the jewels.
Salers is in the running
Salers: a name known for its cows, its cheese… and now its trail run! For over 20 years, this small medieval town has been the hub of ‘La Pastourelle’. It is a mountain race – or rather, a series of races: trail running, mountain biking and hiking over various distances. This event, whose reputation is “climbing” year on year, allows its several thousand participants to burn off some energy amidst the spectacular landscapes of the Monts du Cantal… and to come together after the exertion for festive evenings that naturally showcase local produce!
