High up in the Balagne

Perched on a granite outcrop at an altitude of nearly 500 metres like an eagle's nest, Sant'Antonino is one of the oldest and highest villages in the Balagne region of Corsica. Its narrow streets, covered passageways and houses blend seamlessly with the rock face. The view over the plain and the sea from the ruins of the old castle is magnificent.

Eglise de l'Annonciade

The 17th-century church, which houses an 18th-century organ and a collection of old paintings, stands in the car park at the foot of the village. Behind the church is the charming Brotherhood Chapel, which is adorned with murals.

Word of Mouth

Sant’Antonino was founded in the early 9th century by Guido Savelli, a lieutenant of Ugo Colonna. A family of warriors, the Savellis distinguished themselves through their independence over the centuries: during the Genoese occupation, they welcomed the occupiers only to massacre them during a banquet. Similarly, during the siege of Calvi, Savelli refused to surrender the village, even after seeing his son killed before his very eyes…
