Sarrant, a medieval village in Gascony and a centre of the Enlightenment...

In the heart of Gascon Lomagne, Sarrant reveals a remarkable circular medieval village, built around its Saint-Vincent Church. Step through the 14th-century gatehouse and let yourself be guided through the spiralling alleyways, lined with half-timbered houses built of stone and cob. Here, heritage meets creativity: illustrations, hand-drawn street signs and artists’ studios punctuate your stroll.

The History of Sarrant

During the Revolution, Sarrant formed such an active pocket of resistance against the abuses of republican power that it was dubbed the ‘new Vendée’. On Palm Sunday 1793, young rebels took advantage of a rainy night to fell the Tree of Liberty – a living symbol of the Republic, planted the previous year opposite the town gate. Woe betide those who committed this crime! They were imprisoned in Auch, in the Armagnac Tower, and none emerged alive.
