A "safe place" for the lords of the Limoges
Situated on a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Auvézère, Ségur-le-Château is, as its name suggests, a 'safe haven' that was chosen by the Viscounts of Limoges as the site for their fortified castle. While only the keep of this 12th-century structure remains today, the numerous noble houses with turrets or half-timbering bear witness to the village’s opulent era from the 15th to the 18th centuries. During this period, it served as a Court of Appeal, administering justice across 361 seigneuries in the region.

At the start of the 20th century, the River Auvézère was renowned for being teeming with fish, particularly small fish known as goujons. Ségur was regarded as a fisherman’s paradise. So much so that the village officially adopted the name ‘Ségur les goujons’, only to abandon it, ultimately, five years later!
