Two new villages have been awarded the "Most Beautiful Villages of France" label!
At its meeting on 22 and 23 September 2023 in Yvoire (Haute-Savoie), the Quality and Accreditation Committee of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” organisation voted in favour of granting accreditation to Entrevaux (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) and Saorge (Alpes-Maritimes), bringing the total number of accredited villages within the national network to 176.
Entrevaux, in all its glory
Between Digne and Nice, on the border between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Alpes-Maritimes, Entrevaux seems to have made the most of its surroundings and its history. Nestled at the foot of a rocky ridge that plunges down to the clear waters of a bend in the River Var, this town, fortified by Vauban, celebrates a perfect harmony between the landscapes and architecture typical of the Southern Alps.
Mindful of the need to strike a balance between built heritage and natural heritage, the Quality and Accreditation Committee of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ organisation could not help but appreciate all of Entrevaux’s assets and thus voted in favour of awarding it the designation.
Saorge, guardian of the Roya
In the heart of the Roya Valley, on the border with Italy, Saorge clings to the mountainside with its tall façades. Here once again, there is a magical interplay between the untamed beauty of this secluded region and the heritage of this ancient stronghold, reputed to be impregnable.
Built across three levels linked by a maze of narrow streets and stairways, the village is home to an exceptional religious heritage, such as the Baroque-style Church of Saint-Sauveur and the former Franciscan convent… These are ‘gems’ which Saorge, having been awarded the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ label, will no longer need to defend but can now showcase and promote.
