Saint Petronilla is known to have been, for a long time, Saint Peter’s favourite daughter. She was therefore regarded as the ‘eldest daughter of the Church’ and her veneration continued until the 17th century. In days gone by, a Mass was celebrated on Saint Petronilla’s Day, and when the herds were moved to their summer pastures and passed along this road, bread and salt were blessed. Bread and salt are still blessed every 31 May, and Saint Petronilla is honoured at the chapel that bears her name.
