A medieval city in Burgundy known for its gastronomic delights

Built around an 8th-century Benedictine abbey, this Burgundian town tells the story of its medieval past through its ramparts, fortified gates, cobbled streets, houses, and inns. It also tells this story through its aniseed-flavoured sugared almonds, which are still made in the old abbey. The scent of these almonds welcomes visitors to the town.

A Flavigny speciality

Ever since the monks at the abbey first devised the recipe for the ‘little white balls’ in 1591 – a tradition carried on by the Troubat family from the 1920s onwards – it is no exaggeration to say that aniseed sugared almonds are an integral part of village life. With over thirty employees in a village with a population of just over 300, the company Les Anis de Flavigny is the village’s main employer. Its expertise is also recognised by the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (EPV) label, which highlights the excellence of French craftsmanship.

Les Journées du patrimoine aux Anis de Flavigny

Les Anis de Flavigny® – Photographic Heritage To mark European Heritage Days, Les Anis de Flavigny® are opening the doors to their factory, situated in the heart of the former Flavigny Abbey. This year’s event, themed ‘Photographic Heritage’, offers an opportunity to take a fresh look at this place steeped in history. Over the years, photography has captured the abbey’s stonework, the movements of the workers, the old machinery, the copper basins and the different generations of men and women who have played a part in the history of Les Anis de Flavigny®. From buildings to faces, from gestures to craftsmanship, photography thus bears witness to a living heritage. Throughout the weekend, come and explore the Anis Museum at your leisure, which traces nearly 400 years of history through, in particular, old tins, advertisements and illustrations; step inside the old dispatch and packaging workshops, which have retained their 1930s-era furniture and machinery; then descend into the Carolingian crypt, a remnant of the former abbey church and a testament to the various eras the abbey has endured. You can also take a guided tour to see the heart of the Anis de Flavigny® production process. In the sugar-coating workshop, discover the famous copper basins and watch as the aniseed grains are gradually coated with syrup and essential oils. An encounter with a craft that is passed down and continues to this day within the abbey. Tours and Anis tastings are free of charge. A weekend to see Anis de Flavigny® in a new light: through the abbey’s stonework, the production process, the faces and the photographs that tell our story

Marché de la Saint-Simon 2026

The Oct. 18, 2026 from 9 a.m.

Marché de la Saint-Simon 2026

In days gone by, when Flavigny-sur-Ozerain was still the administrative centre of the canton, the people of the region traded their produce at regular markets. In October, the Saint-Simon market was the last of the season, and therefore the most important, as it enabled everyone to stock up for the coming winter. The Flavigny Animations association and the commune of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain are organising the Saint-Simon market again this year, with the theme of "garage sales, crafts, gastronomy and regional products". As you stroll through the narrow streets of the village, you'll find plenty of entertainment. You'll be able to whet your appetite with a free tasting of a wide range of regional products, and you'll be able to eat in various places around the market. This will be an opportunity for visitors with a taste for good food to sample a whole host of local products: charcuterie, farmhouse cheeses, honey, jams, pastries... and of course the famous Anis, to be tasted in the Carolingian crypt, as well as wines from the Domaine de Flavigny-Alésia or beers from the Brasserie de Flavigny with a product from the Flavigny bakery. Strollers will also be able to discover all sorts of crafts in the streets, lanes and squares: basketry, dried flowers, jewellery, blacksmithing, sculpture, etc. From 9 a.m. onwards, the place will be given over to bargain hunters and lovers of all kinds of antiques, who will, as they do every year, be thronging the stalls of the garage sales to unearth that rare item.
