On the road from Auvergne to Languedoc
Overlooking the Haut Allier valley, on the Régordane route linking Auvergne to Languedoc, this former stronghold was an important stopover for merchants transporting goods from the South, as well as for pilgrims travelling to Saint-Gilles from Le Puy-en-Velay. Bearers of this prosperous era, the noble residences with their stone walls and arcades, whose tall façades stand firm against the Cévennes gales, have seen generations of travellers pass through, some of them famous, such as the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who gave his name to this route, now known as the GR 70.
