The cherry season
At the foot of Mont Ventoux, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking vineyards, scrubland and cherry orchards, Venasque is an ancient medieval town, of which the remains of the ramparts and three Saracen towers still stand today. In the heart of this Provençal village, you’ll find steep, narrow streets and golden-hued stone houses, as well as the Notre-Dame cathedral and a magnificent baptistery dating from the 11th century.
A legend from Venasque
Saint Siffrein leapt from the top of the village with his horse, into the void. His horse struck a standing stone with its hoof, and then they ‘landed’ on the cliff opposite. With a second leap, they reached Carpentras! The Chapel of Saint Siffrein stands on the spot where the stone once lay; it is said to be his funerary basilica.
