The mountain dressed in the colours of Catalonia

The hamlet of Evol, part of the village of Olette, is dominated by the former fortress of the Viscounts of Sost and the bell tower of its Romanesque church. The village's mountainous character is still evident today in its pastoral way of life, and in the houses with their schist walls and slate roofs. Cutting the slate kept the inhabitants busy during the winter months.

The Legend of Évol

Local legend holds that the village of Évol is a haven for fairies and witches. These creatures roamed the mountains as far as the Gorg Nègre (Évol’s Black Lake). Before taking their herds up to the summer pastures, the villagers would accompany the parish priest, who, from the Conjurador adjoining the church, would perform an exorcism to ward off evil spells.
