Montreal: history and the Gascon way of life on the Way of St James.

Welcome to Montréal, a fortified town perched in the heart of the rolling countryside of the Gers! Stroll through its grid-patterned streets, wander beneath its stone arcades or admire the half-timbered houses dating back to the Middle Ages.

Just a stone’s throw away, the Villa de Séviac and its ancient mosaics serve as a reminder of its Gallo-Roman past, whilst the Béon palaeontological site reflects the incredible diversity of the wildlife that inhabited the area 17 million years ago. On the Way of St James, take the time to soak up the history, the panoramic views… and – in moderation, of course! – a glass of Armagnac whilst gazing out at the vineyards that line the horizon.

A taste of the Gascon region

Fancy a taste of the South-West? Head to the Friday morning market to find foie gras, farmhouse cheeses and other seasonal vegetables… And to sample (in moderation!) the region’s wine produce – Côtes de Gascogne wines, Armagnac and Floc – pop into one of the village’s wineries for a chat with the winemakers!

Enjoy a break in the countryside at the Montreal pond

For a real breath of fresh air, take a walk from La Bastide to the Gallo-Roman villa at Séviac and on to the lake. It’s an ideal spot in the countryside for a picnic, a stroll to discover the local flora and fauna, or even a spot of fishing! Two walking routes start from the site if you’d like to continue your outing in the countryside.

Experience the Flame of Armagnac

Immerse yourself in a unique Gascon tradition: the Flamme de l’Armagnac! Every year in November, the village’s estates host several days of entertainment, tastings (in moderation!) and distillation in pot stills, all dedicated to this famous brandy.

Curious little ones and intrepid explorers, set off in search of the bastides with this fun and educational treasure hunt, available from the Tourist Office! In Montréal, children become architects for a day to uncover the secrets of medieval towns...

Candle-making workshop

Fancy something a bit different? Head to the Cirerie de Gascogne to make your own handmade candle, choosing from some unusual scents: Armagnac, Saffron and Leather, or even Garlic, Malbec and Prunes. A creative experience that’ll leave you with a lovely souvenir of your stay in Montreal!

Guided tour of the Béon palaeontological site

Step back 17 million years in time at this palaeontological site! Accompanied by a guide, explore this exceptional site and discover rare fossils, including giraffe-like deer, rhinoceroses and long-forgotten elephants.

Tours take place according to the schedule set by the Tourist Office.

PR® Walk No. 19 “In the Footsteps of the Romans”

Set off on a 10.5 km walk (allow around 3 hours) taking in a medieval bastide, a Gallo-Roman villa and a Romanesque chapel. On this route, starting from the Montréal pond, discover the ancient history of the area.
