Accused of political and religious conspiracies, Marguerite de Valois, known as ‘Queen Margot’, was exiled to Usson in 1586. The granddaughter of François I, daughter of Henri II and Catherine de’ Medici, and wife of the future Henri IV, she remained there for 19 years, during which time her imprisonment gradually gave way to a life characterised by romance, intellectual pursuits and devotion to her faith.

Treat yourself to a panoramic view
Follow the discovery trail marked by a yellow butterfly and climb to the top of the Usson hill. The reward is well worth the effort: from the summit, where a monumental sculpture of the Virgin Mary has replaced the old keep, a 360° view of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy massif and the Livradois mountains unfolds before you! An orientation board will help you identify these landscapes.
Take a journey back in time to the Middle Ages
Every year, on the second weekend of June, Usson takes a step back in time by several centuries for the Médiévales: an archery tournament, demonstrations of traditional crafts, a medieval market and musical entertainment… all take place on the village ramparts. It’s a chance to take part in a friendly and… timeless event!

On this fun family trail, budding young detectives will try to track down the person who stole Queen Margot’s jewellery box! Solve a few puzzles and the culprit will be unmasked!

Usson Cultural Events
Every summer, Saint-Maurice Church hosts a festival of chamber music and early music. The festival extends throughout the village with talks, musical walks and historical tours. An event that truly showcases Usson’s heritage!
