Usson: a royal tale set amongst the volcanoes of Auvergne!

Perched on a volcanic hill, Usson overlooks the landscapes of the Puy-de-Dôme, facing the Chaîne des Puys, the Monts Dore and the Cézallier.

Here, the black-stone winegrowers’ houses, a few fine Renaissance mansions and the ruins of the old fortress tell a story closely linked to that of Queen Margot, who lived here for nearly twenty years.

With its heritage, volcanoes and panoramic views, let yourself be captivated by this village with its distinctive character!

Volcanoes and heritage in the heart of the Puy-de-Dôme

Black rock, basalt columns, the remains of fortifications and a Romanesque church all tell the unique story of Usson. From the volcanic hilltop, you can enjoy a 360° view of the Chaîne des Puys, the Monts Dore and the Cézallier. Keep your eyes peeled!

Word of Mouth

Accused of political and religious conspiracies, Marguerite de Valois, known as ‘Queen Margot’, was exiled to Usson in 1586. The granddaughter of François I, daughter of Henri II and Catherine de’ Medici, and wife of the future Henri IV, she remained there for 19 years, during which time her imprisonment gradually gave way to a life characterised by romance, intellectual pursuits and devotion to her faith.
