On the way to Villeréal, a lively bastide of the South-West where heritage, terroir and traditions meet!
Nestled between Périgord and Agenais, Villeréal invites you to step back in time! Founded in 1267 by Alphonse de Poitiers, this royal bastide reveals its checkerboard layout, typical of the South-West. In the heart of the village, the Place aux Cornières and its two-storey market hall immerse you in a medieval atmosphere. Lose yourself amongst the half-timbered houses and golden stone façades until you reach the impressive fortified church. Markets, festivals and traditions punctuate life in this gem of our heritage.
Beneath the market hall of the royal bastide
With its arcades, historic market hall and cobbled streets, Villeréal takes you on a vibrant journey through the heritage of the ‘new towns’.
In the words of the people of Villeréal
Formerly the town hall of Villeréal, where the ‘jurade’ – the body that governed the town – held its meetings, the upper floor of this magnificent wooden market hall now houses… a studio for a local radio station!

A lecture organized by the Université du Temps Libre du Pays Villeréalais, This conference will be presented by Marie Fiton, a travel guide and member of the Franco-Japanese association “Les Amis de Nishinomiya” (Agen). Japan’s castles are fascinating testaments to the country’s history and culture. These majestic structures, often perched on hills or surrounded by moats, once served as defensive strongholds and residences for feudal lords. These fortresses, built as much for prestige and power as for defense, bear witness to the country’s rich and eventful history. Each has its own unique character, featuring wooden keep towers, deep moats, traditional gardens, and refined architecture that spans the ages.

Do you know what a sycophant is? An anacoluthon? A blanchecaille? A catachresis? A follicular? A clysopompe? A “villanelle”? Or perhaps a “kroumir” or a “Saint-Jean bouche d’or”? These rare, unusual, and colorful words have one thing in common: they come from the vocabulary of Georges Brassens’ songs and Captain Haddock’s repertoire of swear words. In addition to professing their love for the pipe, unwavering friendship, and absolute freedom, let’s take a stroll through the unique world of these sometimes archaic words and rediscover their origins and definitions...
