Description
Built in 1631, this impressive 67-metre-long hall was used as a storehouse for troops and ships before becoming a powder magazine in 1816. Today, the site hosts exhibitions spread throughout the grounds and buildings.
Don’t miss the immersive exhibition "Brouage tells its story!", which immerses visitors in tales of privateers, wars, treasures and royal dramas.
Designed for children and all the adults accompanying them, the exhibition design is quirky and dynamic, helping visitors to understand the often-overlooked importance of this former European capital as a hub for the salt trade in the 16th century and as a strategic military stronghold for Richelieu in the 17th century!
Outside, an augmented reality display shows the Halle aux vivres set within the arsenal in the 17th century, Japanese stepping stones invite children to hop from one key date to the next, from the founding of Brouage to the present day, and three hand-cranked audio boxes give a voice to 17th-century residents of Brouage: a young girl, a wine merchant and a salt merchant.
Inside the Halle aux vivres, comic strips, educational activities, and audiovisual displays help to guide you in a fun and immersive way through the voyages of Samuel Champlain, the history of Brouage’s defensive system, or even a fictional story: “What if Brouage had not been abandoned?”.
