Established in 2004, the “Jardin Remarquable” label recognises gardens and parks (whether public or private) that are open to the public and are of “cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest”. It is awarded by the Ministry of Culture for a period of five years, renewable on the basis of criteria relating to the garden’s composition, its integration into the site, its notable features, its botanical or historical interest, visitor facilities and maintenance in an environmentally responsible manner.

‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ lists 14 sites with the ‘Jardin Remarquable’ designation across 13 villages:

Apremont-sur-Allier (Cher): Parc Floral.
Bormes-les-Mimosas (Var): Gonzalez Park.
Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (Dordogne): Château des Milandes and its Gardens.
Cordes-sur-Ciel (Tarn): Jardin des Paradis.
Domme (Dordogne): The Gardens of Caudon Castle.
La Garde-Adhémar (Drôme): Jardin des Herbes.
Gassin (Var): Germaine l’Hardy-Denonain Garden.
Gerberoy (Oise): Henri le Sindaner Gardens and Yew Garden.
La Roche-Guyon (Val-d’Oise): The château’s vegetable and fruit garden.
La Romieu (Gers): Coursiana Gardens.
Ségur-le-Château (Corrèze): Chédal Agricultural and Landscape Park.
Yèvre-le-Châtel (Loiret): the ‘garden village’ (one of only two recognised in France).
Yvoire (Haute-Savoie): The Garden of the Five Senses.
