The Most Beautiful Villages of France and France’s Favourite Village: success stories in the countryside!
Awarded the title of one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’ in 2024, Bormes-les-Mimosas (Var) has just been voted the ‘French People’s Favourite Village’ for 2026! It was up against Blangy-le-Château (Calvados), La Flotte (Charente-Maritime) and Marcolès (Cantal) as one of the four “Most Beautiful Villages” in the competition! To mark this latest edition, we invite you to (re)discover which other “Most Beautiful Villages of France” have featured on the television programme presented by Stéphane Bern since its launch in 2012, and also to take a look back at these two concepts that reveal the French people’s passion for heritage and the countryside.
Bormes-les-Mimosas voted ‘France’s Favourite Village’ for 2026!
Nestled between the Mediterranean and the hills of the Var, Bormes-les-Mimosas is already a well-known destination for visitors, who are charmed by its flower-filled alleyways and colourful facades at the foot of the Maures mountains. Having been designated one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France in 2024, it received further recognition on Wednesday 7 July through a public vote for the French People’s Favourite Village 2026, securing victory for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region! Three other “Most Beautiful Villages of France” were also in the running. Blangy-le-Château (Calvados) represented the Normandy region. Nestled in the heart of the Pays d’Auge, the village showcased the charm of its traditional architecture, with its half-timbered houses, as well as its natural setting, nestled amongst hills and streams. Also part of the “2024 intake” of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, the medieval town of Marcolès (Cantal) represented the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with its beautiful granite houses with slate roofs and its unspoilt surroundings in the south of Auvergne. Finally, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region was represented this year by La Flotte (Charente-Maritime). Situated south of the Île de Ré, this village with its white façades and green shutters is also a well-known harbour amongst yachters. Having held the designation since 1988, it was, in a sense, the ‘dean’ of the four ‘Most Beautiful Villages’ competing in the contest judged by Stéphane BERN!

Over 30 selection criteria
A few years after its creation in 1982, the network introduced a rigorous method designed to objectively assess the villages applying for classification. Heritage, architecture, town planning, and efforts to enhance the area… are ‘scrutinised’ against no fewer than 32 criteria applied by the network’s Quality Officer and verified by an special committee.
The rigour of this process is essential to ensuring the network lives up to the promise of the ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ designation for visitors! This rigour has also enabled the network to expand to some 182 charming destinations to date to gain credibility with the media – and in addition to Stéphane BERN, we must of course mention Jean-Pierre PERNAUT, whose passion for Les Plus Beaux Villages de France has left its mark on TF1’s 1.00 pm news programme! – as well as with renowned publishing houses. Thus, in 2015, Flammarion took over from Reader’s Digest Selection as the publisher of the official travel guide , whilst MICHELIN produced the road map for over 35 years!
Over the decades, Les Plus Beaux Villages de France have established themselves as genuine destinations and a mainstay of rural tourism in France, attracting over 35 million visitors a year!
The viewers’ vote
In 2012, Stéphane BERN and France 2 decided to ‘tickle’ the French sense of local pride by organising an inter-regional competition to choose ‘The French People’s Favourite Village’. The concept: each region represented itself through an iconic village, for which the public was invited to vote online based on a short feature. A few weeks after voting closed, a prime-time programme announced the result of the vote. For this first instalment, which achieved one of its highest audience figures
, no fewer than 20 villages listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France were featured out of the 22
in the running in total. And it was one of them, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie
(Lot), that took first place
!
Whilst the concept has remained the same since 2012, the voting procedures and the organisation of the programme have evolved over the years: the number of villages in the competition was reduced from 22 to 13 or 14 following territorial reform; the winning village has been announced live on air since 2014; live telephone voting during the programme has been introduced since 2017; celebrities and travel writers have featured in the reports; and the programme has been broadcast on France 3 since 2019…

The enthusiasm of the people of the North was finally rewarded in 2018 when Cassel was voted ‘the French people’s favourite village’. Mittelbergheim (Bas-Rhin) and Roussillon (Vaucluse), two of the eight representatives from the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France’, were hot on its heels, taking second and third place in the rankings respectively!

Once again, eight “Most Beautiful Villages of France” have been selected for Stéphane Bern’s list. The first of these, Montrésor (Indre-et-Loire), has climbed to second place behind Ploumanac’h, a coastal village in the commune of Perros-Guirec (Côtes-d’Armor).
